Bioflavonoids

Bioflavonoids, also known as flavonoids, are a diverse group of phytonutrients found in various fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based foods. They are a subclass of polyphenolic compounds, which are known for their antioxidant properties. Bioflavonoids are responsible for the vibrant colours in many fruits and vegetables, ranging from red to blue to yellow. The main bioflavonoid in this supplement is from lemons.

Lemon bioflavonoids, found primarily in the peel and pulp of lemons, offer several health benefits:

  1. Antioxidant properties: Lemon bioflavonoids are potent antioxidants, helping to neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. By reducing oxidative stress, they may help prevent cellular damage and lower the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
  2. Cardiovascular health: Some studies suggest that lemon bioflavonoids, particularly hesperidin and diosmin, may have beneficial effects on cardiovascular health. They can help improve blood vessel function, reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and decrease levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, all of which contribute to a healthier cardiovascular system.
  3. Immune support: Lemon bioflavonoids have been shown to enhance immune function by supporting the activity of certain immune cells and reducing inflammation. This immune-boosting effect may help the body fight off infections and illnesses more effectively.
  4. Skin health: Lemon bioflavonoids, along with vitamin C found in lemons, contribute to healthy skin by promoting collagen production, reducing inflammation, and protecting against UV damage. They may help improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and prevent premature aging.
  5. Anti-inflammatory effects: Lemon bioflavonoids have demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce inflammation throughout the body. Chronic inflammation is linked to various health problems, including arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders.
  6. Antibacterial and antiviral activity: Some research suggests that certain bioflavonoids found in lemons possess antibacterial and antiviral properties, which may help inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and viruses, thereby supporting overall immune health.

Some research suggests that certain bioflavonoids, including those found in citrus fruits like lemons, may have a protective effect on hearing and cochlear function. However, this research is primarily focused on animal studies or in vitro experiments, and the results are not conclusive.

My Experience

I did try this supplement for one month, for overall wellness and because I read a theory that tinnitus could be helped with bioflavonoids. There wasn’t a very noticeable benefit in that short time, so I assumed months would be needed to have a good effect. However I had no negative effects from the supplement and whilst the tablets were a little large, they weren’t unpleasant and weren’t expensive.

Summary

A good overall supplement to have for general wellness if you want the nutrients from lemons but don’t want to eat them, but to notice beneficial effects you would likely need to take this supplement long term.
